At Paws & Claws Adoptions, our mission is to rehome cats into stable, loving families that can offer lifelong care. We place cats in a variety of home environments — some where the cat lives strictly indoors, and others where indoor-outdoor access is available.

What Does “Indoor Only” Mean?

We classify the following as"Indoor Only" environments:
  • Cats that live entirely inside the home
  • Cats that are taken outdoors on a leash or harness
  • Cats with access to secure outdoor spaces such as cat runs or purpose-built enclosed yards

Our Recommendation

We strongly recommend that cats are kept as Indoor Only pets. This provides many benefits, including:

Health & Safety

  • Longer Lifespans: Indoor cats often live 15+ years, while outdoor cats in urban areas may only live around 2 years.
  • Reduced Injury Risk: Indoors, cats are safe from cars, fights, and other hazards.
  • Lower Poisoning Risk: Exposure to toxic substances like pesticides, fertilisers, and toxic plants is eliminated.
  • Less Disease Exposure: Lower risk of catching viruses or parasites like FIV, fleas, and worms.

Protection from External Threats

  • Safer from Abuse: Sadly, cruelty toward cats can occur. Indoors, they’re protected.
  • Prevents Theft: Cats without supervision are more vulnerable to being stolen.

Environmental & Social Benefits

  • Protects Wildlife: Even well-fed cats hunt by instinct. Keeping them indoors saves native birds and small animals.
  • Improved Bonding: Indoor cats tend to interact and play more with their human families.

If You Choose to Let Your Cat Outdoors

If your home allows outdoor access, please take these steps to keep your cat safe:

  • Initial Indoors Period: Keep your new cat or kitten indoors for at least 8 weeks to learn where “home” is.
  • Vaccinations: Ensure all core vaccinations are current. Consider the FIV vaccination as well.
  • Parasite Prevention: Maintain regular flea and worm treatments.
  • Collar and ID: Use a collar with a bell and your contact number. Cats without collars may be picked up as strays.
  • Night Safety: Keep your cat indoors at night to reduce risk of harm and protect local wildlife.

By keeping your cat indoors, you’re not only extending their life but also protecting them and your environment. Thank you for helping give our cats the loving, secure home they deserve.
